Initially, the school tower housed the bell which had been located in a tree near 416 Golden Gate, where for decades it rung as a fire alarm, and daily late in the afternoon to alert children to head home. In 1960, the bell was given to the Landmark Society and was installed atop Old St. Hilary's bell tower.
After closure of the school in 1978, the building was used for art, drama and dance classes upstairs, and for a childcare center downstairs. Over the half-century, the districts had acquired parcels on both sides of the original school site. However, the Land Company had reversionary rights to the original site, which created a problem when the school district declared all of the parcels surplus in 1982. The dilemma was resolved when the Land Company agreed to purchase the entire property. The old school building has since been converted into condominiums.

Large, historic homes perched on hillsides with commanding views of San Francisco Bay define Belvedere, one of Marin County and the Bay Area’s most desirable communities. With waterfront vistas that rival the Côte d'Azur (and prices to match), Belvedere is one of Marin's most exclusive enclaves. Waterfront activities are the reason many people move to Belvedere. Located on two former islands now filled in with causeways and separated by a private lagoon popular with kayakers, Belvedere is all about water. The San Francisco Yacht Club calls the city home. There’s no disputing that Belvedere is pricey.
